Lanzarote Airport: ATC strike delays pile up in winter peak

Since the night of Wednesday 4 November 2026, passengers through César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport (ACE) have faced a visible wave of delays linked to an indefinite air traffic controllers’ strike at the private tower operator Saerco. Local reporting (La Voz de Lanzarote) and follow-ups citing Eurocontrol put Lanzarote among only two European aerodromes with serious delay pressure at a mid-week snapshot — alongside Athens for separate local reasons. This is a new Canary Islands passenger-ops angle: Saerco tower industrial action becoming operationally visible in the winter peak — not Alicante/ENAIRE weather regulations or a mainland Spanish ATC outage.

What travellers saw

Eurocontrol figures cited by local media recorded about 2,225 minutes of accumulated delay attributed to controller strikes at Lanzarote — close to 5% of total delay in the European airport network in that snapshot. The industrial dispute (USCA / CCOO) has run since 17 April 2026; for months minimum-service rules kept most effects “invisible” to travellers. Winter high-season schedules need more controllers on each shift, so some staff can strike while protected services continue — and queues build when several arrivals or departures cluster.

Spanish Transport Ministry minimum services for Lanzarote in November were reported at roughly 73% of inter-island flights and 53% of mainland and international connections over five hours. That does not mean the rest are automatically cancelled: flights keep operating, but individual services can slip, and flow measures can hold aircraft at European departure airports before they even reach the Canaries. Saerco, Aena and the ministry had not published a fresh end-date for the action in the 6–7 November coverage; always check live status with your airline.

If the schedule is critical

When ACE sits under strike-related flow delay in peak winter banks, same-day rebooking on holiday routes shrinks fast. If a Canary Islands connection cannot absorb another hold, a private jet or empty leg into an alternate Canary or mainland Spanish field may keep the itinerary workable once slots and ATC clear.
